It is easy to put hearing loss off as someone mumbling or not speaking clearly. We believe that it is important to monitor your hearing with annual hearing assessments. Through annual monitoring and preventive actions, we look at how to preserve your hearing. If you or someone you know is struggling to understand speech at home, work, or in noisy areas, it might be a sign that a hearing assessment is needed.
A complete evaluation includes us looking to see if there is any cerumen (wax) build up. Sometimes we can have cerumen that acts like a plug. If this is the case, we will clean it out during the appointment. We will also test your hearing in a soundproof booth. This enables us to identify the softest sounds you can hear at each pitch that we hear speech in. Following the testing, we will sit down with you and go over your results the same day. We will talk about what next steps we want to take, be it hearing protection, annual monitoring, or even looking at hearing aid options.
That pesky ringing in the ears can be really frustrating. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) can be caused by many things and can be a symptom of an underlying cause. Treatment varies depending on what is causing it, the severity, any accompanying issues such as hearing loss and the impact the tinnitus has on daily activities.
Causes of tinnitus include:
A tinnitus evaluation is similar to a hearing evaluation. We will check for any cerumen (wax) build up, and test your hearing in a soundproof booth. Pitch-matching allows us to see exactly what pitch is being affected to better treat that area. Following the testing, we will sit down with you, go over your results, and determine what action is needed.
Today's hearing aids often feature tinnitus therapy, and there are other devices you can use to provide ambient sound and distract from tinnitus. The great thing is that there are many tinnitus therapy apps for your phone that are just a click away!
(Balance & Dizziness)
Being able to function in our day to day activities is difficult when our balance is off or we feel dizzy every time we turn or bend over. At Atlas Audiology, we look at what is causing the disconnect to happen with the vestibular system. Vertigo, dizziness, and balance problems can be life-altering. For many people it can affect their ability to do even the simplest daily tasks. If you are experiencing vertigo or balance issues, your doctor may want to refer you for a VNG balance evaluation.
Balance is a broad term. Dr. Flores likes to sit down with her patients and ask specific questions. Sometime balance issues present as a strange feeling or sensation that is hard to explain. Dr. Flores understands this. The most important thing for the patient or family member to remember is when discussing these symptoms with their physician, let them know it means they need to see an audiologist.
Cerumen (earwax) is something our bodies naturally produce to protect, clean, and lubricate the ear canal. Cerumen should naturally migrate out of the ear canal, cleaning as it moves out; however, different factors can negatively impact this migration. If a large amount of cerumen builds up, it can essentially act as an earplug, affecting the way sounds are heard. The first step in determining if you have hearing loss is making sure there is not any cerumen impaction. If there is, this is something we will take care of in office.
At Atlas Audiology, we know much of your hearing evaluation happens before you walk through our doors. There may be certain occasions when you can't seem to UNDERSTAND what people are saying, yet you have no problem HEARING them. More often than not we will blame our hearing loss on others, saying they are mumbling or walking away as they speak.
The hearing aid selection is very specific to the patient's hearing loss and their needs. Many factors go into choosing which hearing device will best fit the patient, from the type of hearing loss, to personal preference, to lifestyle.
No one understands the shock of discovering hearing loss more than Dr. Flores. She had no problem putting hearing aids on her father. However, when it came to fitting her nine-year old son, she felt the overwhelming emotions that many of her patients feel when being told they have hearing loss and could benefit from hearing aids. At Atlas Audiology, you can rest assured that you are working with a dedicated and empathetic team to treat your hearing.
We believe that prevention is key to preserving our hearing. There are a number of environments that hearing protection is recommended, such as when hunting and farming, or mowing the lawn.
A custom impression is made of your ear canal to make sure you have a proper fitting device that will protect against loud and frequent noise levels.
