Our Hearing Journey
My journey started in 2004 when my oldest daughter was scheduled to see an audiologist for a speech delay. It wasn’t too long after that that my second daughter and my son also started seeing an audiologist for ear infections…. However, it wasn’t until the summer of 2017, nearly 13 years following my initial visit to an audiologist, that my full-circle moment came to be. It was just another summer like any other, where I would test all three of my kiddos’ hearing before the school year began. It was at this moment, while I was testing my son and trying to hold back tears, while I looked through the window of the testing booth, smiling at my son, thinking “why him, why me?” I couldn’t quite understand. Little did he know, that as I smiled at him through the window and talked to him with choked-up emotions, that my heart was breaking. You see, it was at this very moment that I learned my son had hearing loss — I was the one who diagnosed my 9-year-old son.
I was completely taken aback. I was so worried about what kids would say to him in school, because sometimes kids can be mean. And what about his dreams of being a soldier like his mommy and daddy? Oh, how my heart ached as a mom. However, as time seemed to stand still yet move so quickly all at once, it was at this precise moment while my heart was breaking that I also felt a calming peace within me. You see, I am his mother, but I am also his audiologist. This was the moment where I realized what God’s plan for me had been all along. Although my heart was heavy as I continued to try and smile, all while holding back my alligator tears, thinking “how could this be? Why him?” I knew God asked of me, as a mom and a professional, to do my best and give my son the gift of hearing.
I love hearing the stories my patients tell me, from their loved ones not sitting in a corner at family gatherings anymore but engaging in the conversations, to those telling me they feel like they’ve been given their life back and didn’t realize how much they were missing by not hearing what was going on around them.
Every day, I’m given a new opportunity to be a part of someone’s story. I’m able to visit with my patients on a more intimate level. When someone walks through our doors, they are usually walking through because they have some concerns regarding their hearing, ringing, or even their balance. As audiologists, our patients receive a professional that cares and can help solve their problem. This hearing care practice is the right one for me because, here, I am able to help preserve moments that happen and moments that the patients do not have to miss anymore with my help.
I am a wife and mother of three beautiful children. Although I’m not a native of Texas, I was fortunate enough to meet a Texan during my time in the Air Force, marry him, and move to Lubbock in 2005, making it our home. My children have been seeing an audiologist since before they were one. I continue to monitor their hearing and assist with educational environments to make sure they are receiving what they need to pursue their dreams. During our free time, you can catch us at school events, dance and cheer competitions, football and baseball games, or watching movies during family movie night or playing games during family game night.
Although I am a recent graduate of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, I have been in patient care since 1996. I am very active in the community. I hold a board position for a local non-profit, Alström Angels, and am Treasurer for the Lubbock Junior Women’s Club. I have served with the local Junior League of Lubbock and now share my philanthropic heart with my daughters through the National Charity League, Lubbock Chapter. I am also involved in the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and Lubbock Lions Club.
